Bodega Bay: The Perfect Getaway for the Birds (Or You)

One of my favorite Alfred Hitchcock movies is the Birds -- it's campy, creepy and classic all at the same time, and I will definitely be writing about it in-depth on this blog at a later time. But today it's all about one of the towns it takes place in: Bodega Bay.

Located 66 miles north of San Francisco, I highly suggest if you're driving from the City to take HWY-1 to get there. Yes, it takes longer, but it's so scenic you won't care!

Where to stay: There are a few places to stay in-and-around the town of 1000+ residents; I highly suggest the Inn at the Tides -- it's the only one I've stayed at so it's really the only one I can truly vouch for, but during the winter they have a great special and it comes with a bottle of wine in your room. Win. I've also heard great things about the Bodega Bay Lodge.

Where to eat: My favorite casual spot is The Boat House -- expect outdoor furniture indoors (tres chic!) and a very relaxed vibe, but they have great fish-and-chips and clam chowder. For a great date night spot, there's always the famous Tides, but I actually prefer the vibe of their restaurant at the Inn at the Tides: The Bay View Restaurant -- it's quieter and more romantic.

Where to lounge at the beach -- and not turn your back on the ocean: Doran Beach is a great spot that is on the bay side of Bodega Bay -- usually calmer waters and sandy. Salmon Creek is up the road from the town and on the ocean side -- larger waves, longer beach front, and great for exploring what the tide brings in.

And a hike: The top picture is from a recent hike we took at the Bodega Bay Head trail; it's a nice, easy loop that comes in at a little over three miles -- you can also do a shorter version (one mile) and just follow the path to the left side of the parking. And don't be "that guy" -- stay back from the cliff.

Have a great weekend, see you back here next week!
